Moving a family is never easy, but summer is usually the optimal time to move, especially when children are involved. With school on summer break and schedules less strict, most parents see the break as an ideal time to get settled before the school year begins again. Still, even with the timing in your favor, there’s a lot to juggle. At Best Miami Movers, we’ve worked with hundreds of families moving with kids, and we’ve learned a few things about how to keep things smooth from the first packed box to the first day at a new school.
Plan Ahead with the School Calendar in Mind
One of the greatest benefits of summer moves is the school calendar. If you have school-age children you are moving, try to get them relocated so that they have a minimum of a few weeks to acclimate before school begins. This gives them time to explore their new neighborhood, familiarize themselves with their new house, and even find out a few of their new classmates. That breathing space relieves some of the emotional tension that comes with moving.

We always recommend families book their move as early as possible. Summer is the busiest time of year for moving companies, and popular dates, like weekends or the last week of July, tend to fill up fast. Scheduling early also means you’ll have more time to coordinate everything else, from updating school records to transferring utilities.
Packing Kids Rooms Without the Drama
Be realistic, packing your child’s bedroom is a full day event, especially if it is their first relocation. Kids are immensely attached to their things, even those that to adults would be insignificant in nature. Make a sincere effort to include them. Let them pack a small box of their “essentials” which they can keep with them during the relocation. Favorite books, plush toys, and a few toys can come quite a way on shifting night to a new home.

We’ve found that providing children with some control, no matter how minimal, helps them with the transition. Some parents let their children label boxes or sticker them. Others let them choose the layout of the new room. Whatever you decide, it’s not so much about moving their belongings, it’s about helping them carry a sense of safety with them to the new home.
Move Day: Keep It Simple, Keep It Safe
When the moving day comes, we tend to it in a child-friendly way from the start. At Best Miami Movers, we know that things can get confusing and wild for kids, so we work to make the process as calming and structured as possible. Our movers are trained to pay attention to children’s space and timing. We show up on time, get the work done quickly, and treat your belongings with care.
If possible, arrange for younger children to stay with a trusted friend or relative during the move. For older kids, assign them small roles. They can feel useful without getting in the way. Keeping snacks, water, and a few activities on hand also goes a long way.

Settle In Fast, One Room at a Time
Once everything’s in the new house, focus first on setting up the kids’ rooms. Getting their space in order early helps them feel grounded. Try to keep bedtime routines and mealtimes as close to normal as possible, even if you’re surrounded by boxes.
We also recommend investing a day or two getting acclimated to the new neighborhood. Visit nearby parks, walk to local stores, and check out the local library or community center. These small trips contribute to the establishing of that “homesick” sensation and familiarizing the area as more home.
A Smoother Move, A Happier Family
Moving with kids doesn’t have to be so intimidating. With good planning, a focus on routine, and help from a moving team that understands family needs, you can manage the move without the extra headache. At Best Miami Movers, we take pride in helping families settle in as undisturbed as they can be. Our goal is to make your family’s summer move feel like a fresh start, not another to-do.
